My Media Mall FAQ

Q: What is MyMediaMall?

A: MyMediaMall is a service that allows patrons to download audio books and eBooks to their computers and digital devices from home. QPL subscribes to this service through a Library consortium.

Q: How do I access the MyMediaMall service?

A: Visit the QPL website– www.quincylibrary.org – and click on the MyMedia Mall link under “Books, Music and More”. You can also go directly to the site at www.mymediamall.net.

Q: Who can use the MyMediaMall service?

A: Only QPL cardholders can use this service. You must activate your Library Card # before downloading.

Q: What software do I need to use this service?

A: All required software is free to download and can be accessed at the www.mymediamall.net website.

List of actual programs:

  • Adobe Reader – Required for reading Adobe eBooks. Please note that Adobe Reader is not the same software as Adobe Acrobat. Used for about 80% of MyMediaMall eBooks

  • Mobipocket Reader – Required for reading Mobipocket eBooks. Used for about 20% of MyMediaMall eBooks.

  • OverDrive Media Console – Required for listening to all digital audio books.

Q: Why can’t I download audio books to my iPod?

A: MyMediaMall uses the secured WMA format for their audio books. This format is not supported on Apple iPods at this time. For a listing of devices that do support the secured WMA format visit www.playsforsure.com/FindPortableDevices.aspx.

Q: Can I burn audio books to a CD?

A: Yes. For complete instructions on how to burn to a CD using Windows Media Player versions 9 or 10, go to the www.mymediamall.net site and click on Digital Book Help. If you received a complementary Library CD- this Cd is Rewritable and new files can be saved over the old files. These CD-RWs can hold 650 MB.

Q: How many CD's will it take to "burn" an audiobook?

A: You can burn an audiobook to CD in two different ways using Windows Media Player.   We suggest using a standard 650 MB/700 MB CD-RW so you can write over the audio files when they expire.  To write over an audiofile, you must first erase the old file which can be done in the Windows Media Player program.

If you choose to burn a data cd, it will burn the .wma files directly to the cd.  Using this method- you can fit approximately 24 hours of audio on on 74 minute/650 MB CD.  This CD will only play on CD players that play MP3 files- commonly found in newer vehicles and newer cd players.

If your cd player will not play mp3/wma files, you will need to choose the burn audio cd option. With this option, the file becomes much larger when burned to the cd and you will need one cd for every 74 minutes of audio.

The good news is, if you use a rewritable CD (CD-RW) and you accidentally burn the wrong files (data vs. audio) you can simply erase the cd and start over!

Q: How many audiobooks will fit onto a 1GB MP3 player?

A: You can fit approximately 32 hours of .wma audiobook files onto an MP3 player.  Audiobooks range in length from 2 hours to 14 hours per book.

Q: What is a ‘PID’? Where do I find my Mobipocket Reader PID?

A: A PID (Personal Identifier) is a unique identifier for your copy of Mobipocket Reader. To view your PID, open Mobipocket Reader and choose Help > About from the Mobipocket Reader menu. Your PID is 10 characters in length and may include both letters and numbers.

Q: How many titles can I have checked out at the same time?

A: You can have up to 5 titles of any combination of eBook formats and/or audio books checked out at any given time.

Q: Why can’t the digital books be downloaded in the library?

A: Users cannot use the library’s computers to download MP3 books or e-books because the process requires downloading software onto the receiving computer. In order to maintain the security of our network, downloading software to library computers is not allowed.
