Genealogy

The Illinois Room at the Quincy Public Library houses a collection of Historical and genealogical books and files, particularly relating to Quincy, Adams County, and the state of Illinois, but also including some materials on other states and other countries.  Examples are cemetery, census, and other early records indexes, family histories, local histories, city directories, plat books, and clippings of local history articles from the Quincy Herald-Whig newspaper.

Quincy Public Library subscribes to HeritageQuest Online, for access to census, books, periodicals, and Revolutionary War information, and to Ancestry Library for the largest collection of family history online.  You may go directly to www.heritagequestonline.com from library computers, or to access it from home, click on Reference Services, then Databases, then enter your library card barcode number in the box under Heritage Quest Online.  Ancestry Library may only be accessed from the Library computers.

History and Genealogy Resources for Adams County and Illinois

Microfilm

Quincy Public Library has available a microfilm collection of Quincy newspapers from 1835 to the present day, short runs of some other early Illinois newspapers, census records up through 1930 for Adams County and the surrounding counties, early census records from various states and counties, a variety of local church and funeral home records, city directories, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, and other miscellaneous information.  We have recently acquired microfilm copies of many early Adams County government records, including court records, births, deaths, divorces, wills, estates, etc.

Quincy's Local Landmarks and Historic Districts
The Quincy Preservation Commission was created by the Quincy City Council in 1981 to identify buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, and similar historic resources within the city that are worthy of designation as local landmarks and local historic districts.  By the year 2000, sixty local landmarks and one historic district had been designated.
