For the past 35 years, the American Library Association (ALA) has tracked the number of book challenges across the nation. What is a book challenge? A book challenge typically occurs when a group or individual tries to get a book pulled off the shelves of a school or public library.
Does that mean a challenged book can never be found anywhere? No. But if a book is only available for purchase, then that does limit access to information. And public libraries, in particular, have a mission to provide equal access to information for the communities they serve.
The 2024 data recorded by ALA shows an increase in challenges by groups and organized movements, not parents or individuals. Last year also included the third highest number of challenges since tracking began in 1990. The list of most challenged books is released every year in April for Right to Read Day. If you're interested in helping your local library provide free access to materials, make sure you have your library card, make sure you're spreading the word about the great services you can find at the library, and attend a program or two with a friend!
