The description of Muted by Miranda Mundt on WEBTOON goes like this, "On the full moon of her 21st year, the young witch, Camille Severin, is expected to perform the traditional ritual to summon forth a winged demon for her families[sic] success and prosperity. But when the ritual goes wrong, it reveals the terrifying truths about herself and the secrets that threaten to tear her family apart." This description only scratches the surface because the mysteries of Camille's life have to be seen to be believed.
The color palette of this graphic novel will grab you by the eyeballs and not let go until the very last page. Camille's red hair is almost violent as she stands out against the backdrop of her family's New Orleans estate and other locations in the swamp she calls home. Which makes sense since her family deals in blood magic. The only place she does not quite stand out as much is when she stumbles upon another family's territory. Coincidence? Or just a really effective technique that Mundt uses to weave her tale. (Hint: it's the second one)
Camille is not the only character treated with such care and attention in this story. Every magical user in Mundt's world has a familiar and the wise reader would do well to pay attention to the shape each one takes. Lavender the familiar is too cute to even try and describe! The illustrations around Camille's Aunt Athalie in particular are some of the most intriguing as far as portraying her role in the story. A story which has garnered over 66 million views online!
