Celebrate Third Annual Menstrual Hygiene Drive at QPL

As the Quincy Public Library’s Third Annual Menstrual Hygiene Drive comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how this community never fails to show up and do the work. Once again, I find myself humbled and even slightly overwhelmed (in the best possible way) by the generosity of the people of Quincy.

This all started a few years ago when I came across an article about period poverty. Menstruation is natural—but for many, it’s also a barrier. Period poverty can prevent people from attending school, going to work, or fully participating in daily life. And it’s not just about a lack of supplies, but also a lack of education, stigma, and shame. Not everyone grows up learning what’s normal when it comes to their bodies and creating access to products and information helps build dignity, confidence, and opportunity.

I hadn’t realized how widespread the issue was. Period products are often treated like a luxury, and many menstruating individuals are forced to go without. I knew immediately this was a role the library could take on. We might not be able to fix the problem globally, but we could do something in our community.

In 2023 I reached out to a few local organizations to ask if they’d accept donated menstrual supplies. They said yes without hesitation. I wasn’t sure if the community would participate in such an endeavor, but they showed up. And last year? The support was incredible with over $750 in monetary donations to purchase supplies in addition to the already donated pads, tampons, period underwear, and menstrual cups.

This year I’ve watched as donations have poured in once again. It has been surreal to see the impact that our community makes from their participation, whether it’s one box of supplies or a generous cash donation.

Last year, I was lucky to have help. When the Quincy Medical Group reached out asking if we could use volunteers during their Week of Service, I hesitated at first because I was worried I wouldn’t have enough to keep them busy. That concern didn’t last long. We had more donations than the previous year, and the help from QMG’s volunteers was not just welcome, but essential. From sorting to inventory to distribution, I simply couldn’t have done it all on my own.

I’m also especially thankful for all my coworkers here at the library, including our Executive Director, Assistant Director, and especially our Communications and Development Coordinator, who helped spread the word.

The donated supplies from this drive will go directly to organizations serving people in our community, including Quincy Public Schools, the Bella Ease Care Closet, Parents as Teachers, the YWCA, Quanada, Chaddock, Horizons, and a few boxes of supplies will be given to our new Mobile Library just in case there is a community member in need on the road. Each one of these groups is doing important work to support people in need and we’re honored to help them do it.

The drive ends on Saturday, April 12. If you’d like to donate, we’re accepting boxes of pads and tampons in the library lobby. You can also leave a cash donation in the cash box or donate online via our Givebutter campaign: https://givebutter.com/menstrualhygienedrive25

Thank you, Quincy. The library doesn’t exist without the support of our community and drives like this are only possible because of you. I’m so proud to be part of this effort and even more proud to live in a place that steps up for one another.
