Get in nerds! We're going to the library!
Ok, let's be real! Every day is nerdy at the library. The Quincy Public Library is proud to be a safe space to express yourself freely, not to mention supporting the community as a whole & providing access to materials to allow for both. But if you are unsure of your nerdom, there are several you can choose from, with a few listed below:
- Comic Nerd - The Quincy Public Library has all sorts of comics ranging from your standard graphic novels to manga to nonfiction books in comic form. If this is something you are wanting to explore, you can always start with some of the longstanding producers of comics, like DC & Marvel, & finally settle the debate of who made the better superhero comic. Of course, QPL has access to Batman, Wonder Woman, Ironman, Captain America, among others, should you decide to go this route.
- Computer Nerd - Depending on how comfortable you feel with computers; there are several options the QPL can help you access. You can learn about computers as a whole with something like Computer Science: An Illustrated History, computer coding with Coding All-In-One, or how to build your own computer like How to Build Your Own Gaming PC.
- Movie Nerd - Getting into this nerdom is a way to check out a multitude of different genres, eras, creators. You've got the ones into Classic Movies, Turner Classic Movies box sets are a nice way to start out on that. Then there are the people who are into all things Disney, there are several Disney binge boxes through the library, including ones featuring Disney princesses. Some are genre specific, Sci-Fi movies like Star Wars & Star Trek, musicals which range from Singin' in the Rain to Fiddler on the Roof to Rent or fantasy movies like Lord of the Rings. And if we started going down the road of those who follow specific actors, directors, etc, the list would never end!
- Music nerds - Another nerdom that can check off several boxes. There are the people who follow specific artists & everything they have done - like Elvis & all of his music & movies The Very Best of Elvis might be a good starter or Jimmy Buffett, with his music & books again, a good starter would be Meet Me in Margaritaville. Or you could be someone who wants to learn how to play an instrument like the guitar or the piano. You could always be someone who wants to learn the history of music - if you are newer to that, DK eyewitness has stuff on music but there are also things like Music: A Subversive History.
This list could go on & on - videogame nerds, book nerds, food nerds, etc. You can always ask the librarians at QPL for help. Of course, the library's e-services (Kanopy, Freegal, Libby, & Hoopla) are all available for use.
