Public libraries receive help from all across the community; one such organization that provides help is the Friends of the Library (FOL). If you have come to a book sale here, then you're already familiar with one of the FOL services. We asked one of the Friends, Jan Hummel, some questions about the organization and what people should know, here's what she had to say:
How long have you been with Friends of the Library and what is your role?
I have belonged to Friends of the Library for eight years. I am currently the Vice President.
What is your favorite part of FOL?
My favorite part of FOL is working in the bookstore. This allows me to provide a service to and interact with the public.
What would you like people to know about FOL?
The community needs to be aware that the library provides a space for the bookstore. We pay no rent or utilities. This is an "all-volunteer" 501c3 (not for profit) organization whose main purpose is twofold - to promote literacy and purchase items for the library that are not in their Budget.
Why should someone become a member of FOL?
People should join FOL for the reasons I just said - provide a needed service to the library and the community and have an opportunity to meet new friends in the membership. FOL meets monthly as a Board (first Monday at 1pm) and monthly with the entire membership (2nd Monday at 1pm). Dues are $10 per year and in June and December there is a membership luncheon.
Anything else you would like people to know?
We are able to provide these services to the Library because of the generosity of our community - we sell books that are donated to us. The majority of the books sold in the "Second Hand Prose" Bookstore are sold for $3 for hardbacks and $1 for paperbacks. Each month there is a specific genre of book sold at 50% off. Annually we have 3 Book sales which provides an additional revenue stream.
Another service of FOL is providing FREE books to the Train Station, Airport, Senior Center and the Adams County Jail.
