Selection Criteria
Materials are selected based on:
- Accuracy, authority, relevance, demand, and value to the collection.
- Public interest, diversity of viewpoints, creativity, and enjoyment.
- Reviews from professional sources and community recommendations are key.
- Controversial items may be included if they contribute to a balanced collection.
Electronic Resources
- Includes databases and web links.
- Selection based on credibility, usefulness, and alignment with the library’s goals.
New Formats
- Added based on community interest, availability, and maintenance feasibility.
Donations
- Governed by the separate Gift Acceptance Policy.
Weeding (Removing Materials)
- Based on the same criteria as selection.
- Focus on removing outdated, damaged, or irrelevant items.
- Controversial content is not a reason for removal.
Reconsideration of Materials
- Patrons can request a review of materials via a formal form.
- Final decisions rest with the Board of Trustees.
- No material is removed or restricted until a decision is made.
Special Collections
- Illinois Room Collections (Non-Circulating)
- Local history and genealogy materials.
- Includes Quincy Author Collection (retained indefinitely).
- Adult Collections
- Local Author Collection (Circulating): Authors from within 50 miles of Adams County.
- Materials must meet basic suitability but not all critical standards.
- Not retained indefinitely.
- Library of Things Collection
- Non-traditional items (e.g., 3D printers, video game accessories).
- Selection based on educational/recreational value, cost, and feasibility.
