Overview

  • The Library Director oversees all materials.
  • Selectors use professional judgment and community input to choose and discard materials.
  • Materials are accessible to all, with some card-based restrictions for children.

Selection Criteria

Materials are selected based on:

  • Accuracy, authority, relevance, demand, and value to the collection.
  • Public interest, diversity of viewpoints, creativity, and enjoyment.
  • Reviews from professional sources and community recommendations are key.
  • Controversial items may be included if they contribute to a balanced collection.

Electronic Resources

  • Includes databases and web links.
  • Selection based on credibility, usefulness, and alignment with the library’s goals.

New Formats

  • Added based on community interest, availability, and maintenance feasibility.

Donations

  • Governed by the separate Gift Acceptance Policy.

Weeding (Removing Materials)

  • Based on the same criteria as selection.
  • Focus on removing outdated, damaged, or irrelevant items.
  • Controversial content is not a reason for removal.

Reconsideration of Materials

  • Patrons can request a review of materials via a formal form.
  • Final decisions rest with the Board of Trustees.
  • No material is removed or restricted until a decision is made.
