
On this Memorial Monday, the Quincy Public Library would like to highlight Pope Francis I, Steve McMichael, & Steve Kiner.
Pope Francis I was born December 17, 1936 as Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was the first Pope to be from the Southern Hemisphere. He became archbishop of Argentina in 1998 & was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Francis became Pope on March 13, 2013. During his papacy, he was a critic of trickle-down economics, overdevelopment, & of consumerism. He also believed that the Catholic Church should be more sympathetic towards the LGBTQ community. Pope Francis I passed away on April 21, 2025 after suffering a stroke.
Steve McMichael & Steve Kiner were football players.
McMichael was born October 17, 1957. He played college football at the University of Texas, from 1976-1979. In 2010, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He went on to play for the New England Patriots, the Chicago Bears, & the Green Bay Packers. McMichael passed away on April 23, 2025 from complications of ALS.
Kiner was born June 12, 1947. He played college football for the University of Tennessee. In 1999, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Kiner went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys, the New England Patriots, the Miami Dolphins, the Washington Redskins, & the Houston Oilers. He passed away on April 24, 2025.
