A couple of big names from the arts have passed away - Greg Iles & Terence Stamp. They aren't names you would naturally put together. One is American, while the other is British. One is an actor & one is an author. But both made large contributions to their fields.
Greg Iles was born on April 8, 1960 in Baden-Wurtenburg, West Germany. His father was a physician running the US Embassy Medical Clinic there. However, Iles was subsequently raised in & made his home in Natchez, Mississippi, choosing to write from there & raise his own family in Natchez. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in 1996 but put up quite the fight. In the early 2020s, the myeloma progressed to the point of Iles getting a stem cell transplant. Greg Iles passed away on August 15, 2025.
For anyone interested, the Quincy Public Library does have access to books by Greg Iles, as well as materials about stem cell research, about multiple myeloma, or featuring Natchez. (Hoopla & Libby also give you access.)
Terence Stamp was born on July 22, 1938 in London. He grew up during World War II & survived the Blitz, the bombing campaign NAZI Germany enacted against the United Kingdom. (This experience allowed Stamp to help in the staging of some scenes during the filming of Valkyrie.) Over the years, Stamp acted in a wide variety of movies - superhero (Superman & Superman II), western (Young Guns), Disney (Haunted Mansion), comedy (Yes Man & Get Smart), Star Wars. His movies also had a tendency to do the award show circuit - Billy Budd earned a Golden Globe Award & nominations for the BAFTA & the Academy Award; The Collector earned a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor; Priscilla, Queen of the Desert earned BAFTA & Golden Globe nominations. Stamp passed away August 17, 2025.
Obviously, there is more that Terence Stamp did & the Quincy Public Library has access to a few things but Kanopy can also help you access materials.
